Is Your HVAC Ready for the Cooler Weather?

Published 9/30/2021

We all know that the fall and winter weather in the Chicagoland area can be brutal, but have you thought about how it can affect your HVAC system? From high winds to deep freezes, your HVAC unit must be working to combat those harsh winter days.

To ensure your HVAC system is ready to take on the colder weather, we recommend following these steps below or contacting Mr. Duct for proper HVAC Servicing.

Professional Routine HVAC Maintenance

Before we get into the dreaded cold of winter, have a professional come out to inspect your HVAC system to make sure it’s reliable to keep you comfortable all winter long. What we do when conducting a routine HVAC maintenance appointment include:

  • Checking to make sure your thermostat is in working order
  • Ensure all of your electrical connections are tight on your HVAC unit
  • Lubricate HVAC system motors and other moving parts
  • Inspect drains, vents and ducts, refrigerant levels, gas and oil connections, burner combustion, and heat exchanger
  • Clean evaporation and condenser air coils, blower components

Cover your outdoor AC unit with a waterproof cover

Using a cover protects your air conditioning unit by keeping moisture out and preventing ice build-up that could damage your HVAC system. We do not recommend using a cover if your AC unit has a heat pump. Keeping your unit covered with a heat pump could overheat your system. If you’re unsure if you have a heat pump, contact Mr. Duct today to check it out for you.

Keep an Eye on Your HVAC Throughout Winter

When the weather gets bad, we recommend removing snow and ice from your outdoor unit as much as possible. Snow and ice build-up on your AC unit components can cause severe damage to the rest of your HVAC. Removing ice and snow will protect your unit and ensure it lasts for years to come. It’s also important to note that if you’re using a cover on your unit, you should check for any animals or pests that may be taking up residence inside.
